After the Ram Mandir celebrations, the Prime Minister introduced a new plan called Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana. The goal is to install solar panels on one crore houses. Currently, India can generate 73,300 MW of electricity from solar panels, and the plan aims to add 11,080 MW by placing panels on rooftops. The Central Government will launch a big campaign, similar to Saubhagya, to make this plan successful. The reason behind this effort is the previous scheme from 2014, which aimed to generate 40,000 MW by 2022 but only achieved a little over 11,000 MW by December 2023. Due to this, the target year has been extended to 2026.

On January 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana.’ The plan aims to install solar panels on one crore houses to cut electricity costs and make the country self-sufficient in power. To achieve this, changes are being made to the existing plan, including simplifying subsidy allocation. The subsidy amount will be increased to encourage more people to invest in solar panels. Currently, the scheme provides up to 40% subsidy for equipment to generate up to three kilowatts and 20% for three to 10 kilowatts, managed by local electricity distribution companies.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned that the PM Suryoday Yojana aims to help families save ₹15,000-18,000 per year by setting up rooftop solar panels. They plan to allocate ₹10,000 crore for this. Around one crore households will be able to get up to 300 units of free electricity each month through rooftop solar power. The goal is to provide annual savings of ₹15,000-18,000 for these households.

Allocations of funds and future plans 

The government plans to spend ₹10,000 crore on solar power in the next fiscal year (FY25), which is 110% more than before. This shows they’re really dedicated to making the plan work. If everything goes as planned, about 80-85% of the government’s goal to install 40 GW of rooftop solar power could be achieved.

Objectives of Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana

At present, India can produce 73,300 megawatts of electricity using solar panels. By putting solar panels on roofs, we can generate 11,080 megawatts. A report suggested that if all 25 crore houses in India had solar panels on their roofs, we could make 6,37,000 thousand megawatts of electricity. But it’s not possible for all houses. If one-third of houses have solar panels, it can meet the country’s electricity needs.

The government’s plan, called PM Suryodaya Yojana, aims to install solar panels on one crore houses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes this will lower people’s electricity bills and make the country more self-reliant in meeting electricity demand.

• This scheme  will help many households to save a lot of money, around ₹15,000 to ₹18,000 each year.
•  Around one crore households will get up to 300 units of free electricity per month through rooftop solar power, reducing their reliance on regular power sources.
• It also creates economic opportunities too. The PM Suryodaya Yojana wants to create jobs by involving many vendors to install rooftop solar systems. Young people with technical skills in making, installing, and maintaining these systems can find jobs, which will help them to develop skills and grow the economy.
• This yojana also supports electric vehicles by making more charging stations. This not only promotes clean energy but also helps the country to move towards eco-friendly transportation.
• Solar manufacturers also get support from this plan. The president of the Indian Solar Manufacturers Association, Ashwani Sehgal, sees a big chance for growth, estimating a strong market of 30 GW.
• In terms of money, Crisil Market Intelligence & Analytics Director-Research Miren Lodha says the plan could lead to adding 20-22 GW in capacity, with possible investments ranging from ₹91,000 to ₹1,10,000 crore.
• The Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) says having 20-25 GW of rooftop solar power is good. If homes use more solar energy, it could save distribution companies around ₹2 lakh crore in the next 25 years.
