On July 27 Tamil Nadu chief Minister MK Stalin announced a Free Breakfast Scheme for students of class 1-5 in government schools.The government has allocated Rs.33.56 crore for this scheme.Initially this scheme will be introduced in few districts and remote villages through local government bodies,after that it will be extended throughout the state.Around 1.14 lakh children in classes 1 to 5 in 1,545 government primary schools will be benefited under this scheme .

New update :-The latest expansion encompasses 31,000 government schools, with a funding allocation of INR 404 crore ($54 million). The Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme has now been extended to include all government primary schools in TamilNadu, extending its reach to benefit 1.7 million students.
Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated this expansion by personally serving free breakfast to students at the panchayat union middle school in Tirukkuvalai, which holds historical significance as the birthplace of the late M Karunanidhi. During the event, he shared breakfast with the students, fostering a memorable connection.

M K Stalin commended the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme as an innovative program in India, serving as a role model for others to adopt. He noted that despite the new National Education Policy proposing free breakfast for school students alongside midday meals, there has been a lack of effort from the Union government to implement this initiative.
Tamil Nadu Breakfast Scheme Menu
Every student is to be provided a cooked meal of 150-500 gram breakfast with sambar and vegetables.The ingredients which will be used for preparing breakfast it should be approved by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the food should be tried by school management before serving it to students to check the quality of the good .The dishes that will be offered to the students will include Upma,Khichdi,Pongal which will be served with vegetables and sambar.
As per report cooking will be begin by 5:30am and will be completed by 7:45am .Breakfast will be served to student between 8:15am and 8:45am.

Implementation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Breakfast Scheme
CM MK Stalin announced that morning breakfast meals will be provided to 1,14095 primary school students studying in 1,545 government primary schools.
This scheme will be launched at 36 schools in Chennai ,40 in Tirchy ,15 in Cuddalore,20 in Kanchipuram,21 in Kumbakonam of Thanjavur district,48 in Vellore,26 in Madurai,54 in Salem,14 in Dindigul,22 in Tirunelveli,26 in Erode ,19 in kanyakumari,62 schools in Coimbatore have been selected in 381 municipalities.
New update :-The scheme was launched in September last year covering about 3,000 government schools. Now, it has expanded to benefit 31,000 government schools across the state, with a budget allocation of ₹404 crore. Initially conceived as a pilot scheme to provide nutritious breakfast to 100,000 students in classes 1 to 5 within 1,545 government schools, it received an allocation of ₹33.56 crore.
The free breakfast scheme for all government school students from Classes I to V, announced by Chief Minister MK Stalin in May, will be launched on a trial basis at schools in 292 village panchayats across 15 districts. After the first phase is complete, the scheme will then be implemented in all schools
Benefits of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Breakfast Scheme
The following benefits will be provided to Students of Primary School under Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Breakfast Scheme :-
- This scheme is only for the primary students class 1-5.
- There are 13 different food items for breakfast that will be given to students.
- Free breakfast will be provided on school working days from Monday to Friday.
This scheme will be beneficial for more than 43,600 students studying in schools in Municipal Corporations,more than 17,400 studying in those in municipalities,more than 42,800 in village panchayat and more than 10,100 students in remote and hilly area would be benefited first under this scheme.This scheme would make a significant impact on the expansion of school education.It will promote joyful learning.
“Many students arrive at school without having breakfast, often walking long distances in the scorching sun, leaving them exhausted by the time they reach”. K Priya, a government school teacher from T Nagar, expressed concern over an alarming number of children experiencing dehydration and malnutrition in the morning hours.
RK Babu, an education rights activist, concurred with this sentiment, highlighting that the proposed scheme could also improve attendance, as children would be motivated to attend school for breakfast. He emphasized the importance of nutritious breakfast for cognitive development and noted that some parents send their children to school primarily for access to the mid-day meal, making this initiative an added advantage.
This was one of the five schemes announced by the CM to mark the completion of one year of the DMK government.
